22nd April 2010 - Houghton expand into North American market

Fast growing Walker based engineers Houghton International are continuing their global expansion by pushing into the North American market. After successfully completing their move into a new 10ksqft manufacturing and office space close to their Walker Riverside HQ, the company is aiming to take sales to £5 million in less than 2 years, creating 40 new jobs in the process.

The company will exhibit their manufacturing services in Orlando at the Electrical Apparatus Service Association Convention & Exposition in June, where they will officially launch their range of high voltage coils and increase worldwide brand awareness with potential customers in key target markets.

Managing Director Michael Mitten said: “As one of the biggest events in our sector’s worldwide event calendar, the EASA Convention will enable us to promote our range of products to potential customers from all over the world, but especially the key North American market. Alongside our successes in the UK rail market, this is one of the opportunities we expanded to take advantage of.

“This investment follows on from recent success in the Canadian market and significant
interest from SE Asia and the Middle East.

“We have agents on the ground now in Dubai, covering the entire Middle East region, and
in Canada who have been extremely successful at opening new doors for us. Now the
time is right to take on the USA where we have only really dabbled in the past.”

Following record growth during the past 2 years, the company have racked up an
impressive order book of £6.5 million over the next 4 years. They have further increased
their market share in the UK’s rolling stock repair market, following a recent 4 year contract
win to overhaul propulsion systems for a southern based rail franchise.

Houghton International were named the Small Business of the Year at the Tyneside &
Northumberland Business Awards in March and compete for the regional crown at the
North East Business Awards at Hardwick Hall on 29th April.
