23rd April 2010 - Sir Clive Delivers Masterclass

One of our best known sports leaders, the 2003 World Cup winning Head coach of England’s rugby team, Sir Clive Woodward, shared his experience of transferring leadership methods between sport and business with an audience of the region’s entrepreneurial leaders at the Hilton, Gateshead 20th April 2010.

It was the second time that the Entrepreneurs’ Forum’s have invited Sir Clive to the region and comes at a time when opinion suggests that entrepreneurs will play a key role in leading the region out of the tough economic climate of the last 18 months.

Sir Clive kicked off by emphasising that talent alone is not enough and that a thirst for knowledge is essential in maximising the potential of any individual or team; something that will have reassured the 160 delegates, Entrepreneurs’ Forum members and guests who were primed and ready to learn as much as possible to take back for the benefit of their businesses.

Sir Clive’s coaching style is based on experience from the business world, from being an international player and learning to coach with hands on experience once retired from his playing career. As such, many of his coaching methods were new to rugby and he created an environment where change thinking and thinking differently became the norm.
He was the first full time England rugby coach of the professional era and he developed his ideas based on 9 years in the corporate world with Xerox and, perhaps more crucially, 9 years running his own IT leasing company alongside his sporting career.

It was this practical experience developed from different fields that has shaped his approach to sportsleadership. He is currently the Olympic Performance Director for the British Olympic Association., working alongside other key stakeholders in British sport all aimed at delivering a successful outcome for as many sports and athletes as possible for the London 2012 games.

When he first took on the England role his focus was on building the capability of the team, but alongside the team development he also realised that to be a world-class team it needed to be comprised of world-class individuals.

‘In business we can sometimes lose sight of the individuals developmental needs by concentrating on team all the time’ .

The focus became the need to work with each player, benchmarking them against the best in the world in their position, breaking down and studying the elements of their game that could be improved.

‘This is no different to any small business or organisation; I believe that we need to have champions in every role in a business in order for it to really achieve its maximum potential, not just at the top.’

Sir Clive harnessed the talent of people and experience from outside the world of rugby introducing the team to high achieving individuals from the world of sport and business, developing the latest IT technology for detailed analysis and taking them to work with other teams such as the Royal Marines.

Their time with the Royal Marines gave them a real insight into how to handle pressure, but more importantly thinking correctly under pressure or T-CUP as Sir Clive refers to it.

‘There’s no way that the Royal Marines can recreate every potential scenario that they’ll encounter so they spend a lot of their time in planning, working through situations and determining how they will respond. It’s an essential part of their training because if they make the wrong decision in it could be life or death.

'For the England team it was the difference between winning or losing but we took their approach back into our environment and developed this kind of thinking to be better prepared for any situation that could confront us ,on and off the field of play. Everyone in the team got used to making decisions under pressure, the players and coaches were a special group of people with an outstanding attitude to the job in hand. I’d like to think that our ability to think correctly under pressure made the difference at 17 – 17 with only seconds on the clock back in 2003.’

Sir Clive described for delegates the four components elements that need to be in place to create champions and alongside talent, thirst for learning and the ability to think under pressure, it’s attitude that really marks those who will succeed.

Current thinking suggests that most champions have spent 10,000 hours practicing and perfecting their performance, learning and thinking about how they can make the most of their talent. So there is no substitute for hard work.

The importance of having the right attitude was demonstrated when Sir Clive spoke about shared responsibility. As a leader he does not mean that you should delegate responsibility but rather encourage others to join your journey with you and accept responsibility not only for their actions but also for those of the business or team.

He quoted one of the all-time greats, Mohammed Ali, ‘Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them - a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.’

He used this to explain that having talent, whether it be in sport or business, is the starting point for any individual. Often he feels that too many people believe it to be the finishing point. It’s what you do with your talent and how you develop your skills and knowledge that count and differentiates an individual or business. There are always ways to increase our knowledge. We live and work in testing times and having a ‘sponge’ like mentality is the one that will enable people to adapt most successfully to change.

Entrepreneurs’ Forum board member, Steven Bell introduced Sir Clive to his entrepreneurial peers and summed up his own thoughts at the end of the workshop,

‘For me, the workshop has come at exactly the right time. We’re looking at leadership within the business and the lessons learned today will be invaluable as we move forward. The interactive element of the workshop allowed me to write down some of the issues we face and offered real practical insights into the actions we should look to take. This afternoon hasn’t just been about sitting and listening, it’s been a genuine opportunity to learn and take time to think about what we can do as a business to improve our performance. ’

The Forum’s Chief Executive, Carole Beverley was delighted to welcome Sir Clive back to the region 6 years after he first spoke to members,

‘As a region we’re often seen to be playing catch-up but we know that we have the people with the talent and attitude to succeed. When Sir Clive took over the England team few would have expected such a high level of success for the team, crowned by winning the world cup but his vision and attention to detail and innovative coaching style proved to be the difference. By bringing speakers of Sir Clive’s calibre to the region our aim is to support the learning and personal development of the region’s entrepreneurs giving them the opportunity to work on rather than in their businesses and think deeply about what will bring them success.’

‘It’s essential that our speakers bring a thoroughly practical approach based on real experience and it’s clear from feedback that those who joined us today will take meaningful action in their businesses based on what Sir Clive has shared.’

Mike Parker, director of Orange Bus Ltd. Agreed, ‘The afternoon with Sir Clive was excellent. As a big fan of the work he did with the England Rugby team it was fascinating to hear about that process from the man responsible for their success. To hear how he applied small business principles to the running of a sporting team was both novel and inspiring.’

‘Without doubt many of the lessons I learnt from Sir Clive will be applied to the running of my business - and I'm sure they'll be well received by all whom I work with.’

22nd April 2010 - Plugged-in Places steps up a gear as largest collection of eco-friendly vehicles showcased on Teesside

The largest collection of ‘green’ vehicles ever showcased in one location was unveiled in Stockton today as part of the North East’s Plugged-in Places campaign.

Simon Bailes Peugeot is at the forefront of Plugged-in Places, as the North East’s leading Peugeot dealership and a partner in the pilot scheme, and hosted a major event to present the world’s largest collection of eco-efficient vehicles.

Peugeot is a global leader in environmentally-sound vehicles having produced the lowest CO2 emission vehicles in the world and, for the first time ever, all of the vehicles were in one place at the same time.

The low CO2, electric and hybrid vehicles converged at Queen’s Campus, Durham University in Stockton on Thursday April 22nd, along with the technical experts that designed, engineered and produced them.

The event hosted around 100 hundred of the key people involved in Plugged-in Places and revealed more about how the North East is leading the way as a pilot area.

Guests were also given the opportunity to view and test-drive Peugeot’s current and planned low emission vehicle launches and to find out more about the largest collection of environmental technology from specialists from Peugeot’s Paris headquarters who shared details of their current carbon reduction strategies and future plans.

Models on show included the i0n four-seater electric vehicle, which will be available in the UK from the end of this year and the Peugeot Bipper and Expert electric vans.

Peugeot felt that the Tees Valley was the ideal location to unveil its extensive vehicle range thanks to the region’s commitment to the development of an electric vehicle charging infrastructure and Simon Bailes’ key role in, and passion for, making this happen.

Earlier this year, the North East was named, alongside London and Milton Keynes, as one of the Government’s Plugged-in Places pilot areas to trial low-carbon vehicles which will see up to 300 charging points for electric vehicles being installed at key locations around Teesside over the next two years.

Simon Bailes, who is managing director of Simon Bailes Peugeot which will be a charging point for the vehicles, said: “I am a proud partner of Plugged-in Places and I am passionate about ensuring that the North East is at the forefront of such an important scheme. It’s a major coup for the Tees Valley to be the chosen venue for Peugeot to showcase its range of outstanding design and expertise in low emissions vehicles which are set to change the face of motoring.”

Jon Goodman, managing director of Peugeot UK, added: “At Peugeot we are constantly striving to be global leaders in eco-driving, having embraced the development of electric vehicles for many years. Being able to showcase our collection of low emissions vehicles, which combine the latest engineering technology with stunning design, here in the North East, where our leading regional dealership is an active partner in the vital Plugged-in Places pilot, is very exciting for the whole company.”

21st April 2010 - Guisborough Teen New Face In National Ambassador Programme

A Guisborough teenager has been chosen to represent the North East as part of the national Enterprise UK ambassador network.

Sixteen-year-old web enthusiast Tim Curd along with his business partner 16-year old Harry Perks from Devon, were both finalists in the 2010 Enterprise UK Enterprising Young Brits awards, for their online web hosting business, SimplexWebs.com.

Tim, who met Harry online whilst researching into the business model, set it up when he was still at Laurence Jackson School in Guisborough to offer an affordable web hosting service that brings quality design and support services to the off-the-shelf website marketplace.

The pair already have a client base that extends to Europe, America and Asia. They hope to expand their product range by offering virtual private and dedicated servers.

As Enterprise UK ambassadors, Tim and Harry will share their knowledge, passion and expertise with other young budding entrepreneurs across the country by visiting schools, leading workshops and mentoring.

Tim, who will now be the youngest Enterprise UK ambassador in the North East said: “Having spent years working on our own personal websites, we felt that the available cheap hosting services inevitably always compromised on quality. Faced with the alternative of paying high prices, we decided to set up our own hosting service that offers both affordability and quality.

“From a small virtual private server, to running multiple servers across the globe with clients from multiple continents, SimplexWebs has grown to be a leading provider of web hosting services.

“Our support is something we're renowned for. We provide native English speaking personal account managers, for those little things that you won't get via traditional web hosting support such as advice on design, assistance choosing which package they need and even advice on the best broadband provider.”

The pair made it through to the final of the prestigious Enterprising Young Brits award alongside 28-year old Stuart Varrall of Teesside based Fluid Pixel ltd, but were pipped at the post by a Corby-based online business for text and image based pay per click advertising.

Tim continued: “Although we didn’t win the Enterprising Young Brits award we were delighted to be appointed as Enterprise UK ambassadors, as this gives us great recognition and national exposure of our business - the benefits will really help us market ourselves as well as help others thinking of starting their own venture.

“Being an Enterprise UK Ambassador is a great opportunity to meet and share idea with the UK’s leading young entrepreneurs. Being around them is a positive, motivating and uplifting experience.”

Enterprise UK is currently looking for more North East entrepreneurs to become an ambassador. For more information visit: www.enterpriseuk.org/ambassadors

16th April 2010 - Noda's Got Talent.......

Local taxi firm Noda are bursting onto our screens this month when they welcome successful ITV show Britain’s Got Talent to the North East on Saturday 17th April, 8pm. The popular company has received the greatest compliment by being asked to star in the introductory segment of the programme covering the Newcastle auditions.

This accolade is not undeserved, as the firm is the largest in Newcastle and has been taking the people of the region home for over 60 years. Their appearance is recognition of their dedication to providing an all-round excellent service, and they are grateful to be chosen as ambassadors of the North East in such a public manner.

Britain’s Got Talent began in 2007 and has followed the success of similar shows like The X Factor and Pop Idol. People tune in to see the people of Britain stand up in front of three judges, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan to showcase whatever talent they believe they have. Anything from pianists to singing dogs to jigging Greek men, the show knows no boundaries and continues to entertain the masses every year.

The family show is no stranger to Geordies’ personalities. Television favourites Ant and Dec present the variety of acts providing a humorous commentary to whoever may grace the stage.

On the topic of these familiar faces, the greeting was filmed on the set of well loved children’s drama Byker Grove. It was late August when Noda were asked to supply six ‘cheery’ taxi drivers from their team to say a few welcoming words. There was deliberation over the setting with the Angel of the North being the initial selection. However, the final location seemed more fitting considering the show’s hosts and their humble beginnings.

Delighted Noda manager, Eddy Binks, commented “It’s an absolute honour to be asked to represent Newcastle on Britain’s Got Talent. We all watch the show, and jumped at the chance to appear as an introduction to the city we all live and work in. The drivers were very excited on the day we filmed it, but I think some of them got stage fright on the day. I ended up leading the drivers in a chorus of the Beatles in one take!”

A prime candidate for the successful programme itself, Noda boasts a large array of talents. They can provide for large parties, wedding, proms and corporate events. They have a variety of vehicles from 5-7 seater taxis to highly sophisticated cars with wheel chair access available. The team may not be able to sing and dance, but they can certainly be quick, clean and dependable.

With the popularity of Susan Boyle, the style of Diversity and standards as high as Simon Cowell’s trousers, Noda have the winning formula. It’s a resounding ‘Yes’ for Noda Taxis from the customers. For more information visit www.noda-taxis.co.uk2. For bookings and quotations call 0191 222 1 888.

9th April 2010 - Don't Phreak Out

Director of Gateshead-based telecommunications provider Eclipse Networks James Drake explains the latest telephone hacking scam better known in the industry as ‘phreaking’ and how to safeguard your business telephone lines.

Businesses are constantly bombarded with instructions to safeguard their organisations against fraudulent activities; from steps to avoid identity theft to more complex solutions undertaken to protect IT systems.

However, there is one form of fraud, which is becoming more prevalent, and yet seems to have escaped many business leaders’ attention; Telephone System Dial Thru Fraud, or ‘phreaking’ as it is often referred, involves unauthorised access to telephone lines and subsequent unauthorised outbound calls, usually to international destinations and premium rate services.

I have seen the problems phreaking can cause, and crucially, the bills it can run up, which if not identified early enough can run into thousands of pounds, which the company unfortunate enough to experience is completely liable.

Any organisation with a phone system (often known as a PBX) can be targeted, meaning that a large percentage of the UK’s registered companies, charities and other not for profit organisations are at risk. The good news however, is that the risk of this fraud can be substantially minimised by following a straightforward best practice policy, which costs nothing, yet protects companies against a very real threat.

Phreaking began in the mid 1950s when the first phone switches were developed, and much like computer hackers, perpetrators have evolved their techniques to adapt to new technology.

Currently the most common method is for hackers to gain access via bypassing an organisation’s voicemail system, but other common methods include, hacking through a call put through by an operator or hacking through an auto attendant - an automated voiced system that answers incoming calls and diverts them to the relevant department in a company.

By following the advice below, organisations can reduce the risk of telephone hacking:

  • Ensure that employees set up and guard voicemail PIN numbers carefully; these should never be written down, programmed into auto diallers or assigned to speed dials on mobile phones. Always use the maximum number of digits available when setting up access PINs and avoid combinations that allude to the extension number or location in particular.
  • Remote access to voicemail should always be disabled as standard, but if vital to the day-to-day running of your organisation, remote workers should remain extra vigilant when dialling in.
  • Change passwords at regular intervals, and always remove PIN numbers of authorised individuals when they leave the company.
  • Place restrictions on long distance and premium rate calls. The more restrictions you place on expensive calls the more secure your system will be. Think about which employees really need access to premium rate calls, and which countries you do business with. From that, talk to your call and line provider about barring calls to all non-vital destinations. If you use an auto attendant system, speak to your system supplier about making it as secure as possible.
  • To stop hackers getting into the system via operators, train your phone ‘gatekeepers’ such as receptionists, to spot suspicious incoming call patterns. Hackers may try any of the following; calling in and repeatedly asking for an invalid extension, calling in with wrong numbers, excessive call hang ups and asking employees what number or party they’ve reached, dead air calls - incoming calls where the caller remains silent and waits for a hang up. If your gatekeeper notices a pattern of any of the above, alert your call and line provider and system maintainer immediately.

Eclipse Networks are currently trialling a new system that limits the risk that phreaking poses. It works by analysing algorithms within the billing software to detect potential fraudulent patterns. If a pattern is detected, customers will be notified and measures will be taken to bar the offending calls. However, whilst systems like these will undoubtedly help protect businesses, there will never be a real substitute for remaining vigilant and educating staff about potential dangers, especially at holiday periods such as long bank holiday weekends, which hackers will see as prime target for illegal activity.

A Drum spokesman said: “Cool Blue Brand Communications topped the list with its campaigns doing well at the CIPR Pride Awards, in fact it scooped the UK record number of wins, while also picking up points at the Fresh Media & Digital awards.”

Cool Blue collected four gold and four silver awards at the CIPR Pride Awards and a bronze at the Fresh Media & Digital Awards.

The Drum trawled the results of a large cross section of awards schemes to identify the most awarded regional agencies over the last year and gave scores depending on the number and type of awards won.

Cool Blue was just one point away from being named best PR company in the UK, and was way ahead of its nearest North East rivals.

Managing Director Tanya Garland said: “This is a fantastic outcome for our team and our clients. It’s good to know that the hard work, determination and creativity of the team is acknowledged in this way and supports what we already know, that we at Cool Blue are leading the way.”

1st April 2010 - Five Is The Magic Number For Young Enterprise Company

Five North East businesses celebrating their fifth year in business have come together to donate their services to this year’s winning Young Enterprise North East (YENE) start up company.

A ‘five to keep your business alive’ business start-up support package will be provided by five local businesses to help kick-start the winning company at the YENE Regional Final.

The prize package includes, free accountancy support from North Shields-based Blu sky chartered accountants, green office supplies from Ethicalsuperstore.com based in Gateshead, PR and marketing support from Newcastle’s award winning PR agency O Communications, an IT start-up package from Darlington-based Resilient Business Systems and a telecoms package free for a year from Eclipse Networks in Gateshead.

Each year YENE has Regional Final award ceremony whereby students who have set up their own company as part of the school Young Enterprise Company Programme battle it out to become ‘Company of the Year’.

This year the winning student company will not only go on to represent the region at the National Final in London but will also be awarded with the ‘five to keep your business alive’ business support package to help them turn the business into a real trading company.

Young Enterprise North East chief executive Catherine Marchant said: “This year the winning team will win the ‘five things you need to have to get your business started’ package from the five local companies that have kindly donated their services to help the student company get up on its feet.

“We decided to form the start up package and give this as an additional prize to the winning Company Programme business as, in the past, these companies have found it difficult to turn their school-based business into a reality.

“It is a key objective of YENE to ignite the passion for business, and encourage young people to want to go on from their Company Programme to running their own business for real one day.

This practical business support package gives them a platform to make a go of their business idea in the real trading world. The prize contains everything they need to get started, from IT, telecoms and accountancy support to offices supplies and knowing how to promote their new business with the PR advice.

“I was overwhelmed by the support of the local business community. It is nice for them to be able to celebrate their fifth year in business in this practical and charitable way.”

Eclipse Networks director James Drake said: “As part of our fifth birthday celebrations we wanted to give something back to the community and when this opportunity arose, we thought it was a great idea; something practical that we could easily assist with but something that will make such a big difference to a young start up company.”

Blu sky Accounting partner Dave Gibson said: “We are pleased to be able to celebrate our fifth birthday by donating our services to a young company. Hopefully with our help they will also be successful enough to see their fifth year and beyond in business.”

Andy Read of Resilient Business Systems said: “As a young company ourselves we know how difficult starting out can be. We are therefore delighted to be able to help out.”
